During the recent visit of the Colombian government’s presidential delegation, led by President Gustavo Petro and Chancellor Alvaro Leyva, to Germany, a series of cooperation agreements were signed. Among them, a Memorandum of Understanding between both nations stands out, aiming to explore and exploit the industrialization of this renewable energy in order for Germany to meet its energy needs that have been affected by the war in Ukraine and its impact on Russian gas trade, while simultaneously combating climate change.

To achieve this, the Fraunhofer Society, a global leader in research, will spearhead the research process in Colombia for the logistical development and commercialization of green hydrogen.

German Minister of Trade, Robert Habeck, stated, “We have a major project, the energy transition, which will be successful. Peace and the environment are the most important topics for the Colombian government. Germany wants to be a prime partner in the country’s transformation, achieving significant progress from a climate perspective.”

He added, “Colombia produces coal, and Germany purchases coal. The major task is to ensure that coal supplies do not come from Russia, and this has been capitalized on by the Colombian industry.”

He emphasized, “The production of green hydrogen is important to us. Germany wants to provide support in the green hydrogen industry and all the necessary machinery. We no longer want to buy coal but instead utilize other green energies.”
